About
Honey Chile Hives are located across several different locations in Detroit. This labor of love began as a way to start a new adventure while helping to support our local ecosystem. In addition to the beekeeping work, we also visit communities and offer educational activities in fun and interactive ways. You are invited to join us on the journey! If you are a friend, a follower, or a fan of Honey Chile Hives, you are an honorary member of Puff Nation (whether you have puffy hair or not).
Our Hives
We are so excited for bee season! Honey bees require a lot of care including food and medical treatments. Because of issues with weather conditions, pesticides, and diseases that affect honey bees, it takes a lot of work to sustain the hives year after year.
We have up to 21 hives during the summer months, and they are located in private and community gardens, urban farms, and mini orchards in Detroit.
Each hive is a colony – a family of bees – and the queen is the leader. We don’t name all of our bees (each hive can have about 50,000 bees in it), but we do name our queen bees.
We will be posting videos on Instagram with updates throughout the season. Follow us to see what happens with your favorite queendom throughout the year! Did Queen Rhapsody’s hive survive that wind storm? Will Queen Radiance’s colony be invaded by giant murder hornets? Did Queen Lullaby get accidentally smushed during a hive check? Join the adventure on Instagram and stay tuned!
